This book may give you a head start on your classmates before you step into a classroom. There are plenty of tips to help first year students. You can get a pretty decent idea of what to expect your first year and some basic exercises/examples to help you start thinking like a law student. What you will not get, however, is help with the LSAT, or help with selecting or getting in to law school. This book basically assumes you are already admitted to law school. So, if you are still wondering if law school is the right choice for you, you can get some insight into what it is like, but really this book is aimed at people who are definitely going to law school and just want a leg up on the competition.

Well, I truly wish I had had this in my arsenal about law school before classes had started.

Nearly everyone going into law school has done their research and has heard that it is an environment and thinking style that involve significant personal adaptation. Practically no one understands what that actually means until, well, 'the landing craft hits the beach'. The latter two thirds of the book were helpful in 1L simply because, like many other books, it gave me the chance to preview material and know how to look at it. Doing so increases confidence and reduces that type of stress that detracts from your success.The real value of this book is in the first hundred or so pages, which could be a book unto itself and leave you with plenty of winning ideas. This first portion is unique and entirely practical, to which I credit for giving me the heads up I needed to stave off a relationship disaster, which would have likely ruined my law school experience. It calls out law school for what it is -- a business. It clued me in on how to view my legal education, in some respects, as a business decision; an attitude that has totally preserved and expanded my freedom now that I am graduated.This book is by no means an exhaustive treatise. It is simple and no nonsense. If you are willing to consider and put some energy into this Author's wisdom, you will save yourself a lot of grief, and may possibly even choose a different career path. Well worth the money.

I loved it cuz I had no idea what law school is like, and I plan on attending this fall. I don't know any lawyers, my dad isn't a lawyer nothin like that, so i was just goin off what i saw on law and order on TV. But this book definitely showed me what the academics are like in law school, and now I'm sure I wanna be there. It also gives awesome advice about deciding and good reasons for getting a law degree or not. and the author is really funny at times which makes the book not boring. If you think the LSAT is the most important part of goin to law school, well this book is just as important as logic games. it's actually way MORE important cuz you might decide law school is a bunch of hooey then you don't have to even take the LSAT!!! :)

I am certain that I would not be as comfortable today in school if it weren't for the advice the author gave me in this book. I am amazed at how many of my classmates, although very bright, are on edge and seem to be struggling to keep up. I can't help but think that they should have picked up a copy of Lord-Leutwylers treatise!This is a MUST READ for any incoming law students.

There are dozens of fencing books on the market today, and they all cover various aspects of history, French vs. Italian style, basics, exercises, etc. Sowerby's book is by far the best out there on the "chess" aspects of fencing-- both strategy and tactics. Andrew takes a very balanced tone, giving just enough on history, warm ups, beginning skills, footwork, etc., then launching into the most advanced topics-- parries and ripostes from every position for both left and right, deception, counter/counter moves, compounds, feints, and MUCH more.There are quick chapters on epee and sabre, but the main concentration is on foil, although many of the techniques apply to all three when you remove right of way and added target considerations-- much of the footwork, strategy and tactics apply. This is a RECENT book, with a LOT about modern competition, the move toward force and strength in the olympics vs. finesse, and the tactics the most accomplished winners use.I recommend this both for beginners and advanced fighters, and I also use this book in my combat fencing classes for real blade situations. There are tips here (like keeping the line of sight where the attacker can't see it and not exposing the subclavian with too narrow a trunk presentation) that are amazing for any type of knife or sword training, including katana, Phillipine, Samurai, etc. Advanced fighters will LOVE the detail of the tactics. I've seen many books call fencing "physical chess" but this is the only one that really gets into that kind of move-countermove detail, and I've read them all!The only downside is that it's written by and for a UK audience, so you'll have to get over some of the "British" system, organization and other references, but the tactics are so well done-- better than any other book on the market-- that this annoyance is worth it if you're coming from a different (eg US) viewpoint. You might also have to buy this FROM the UK depending on vendor at the time you search Amazon, but both vendors we've tried here on Amazon delivered to the US in just days! This also is available for Prime from time to time, but with a couple week wait.Be aware of, but don't be put off by the "96" pages spec on Amazon-- the type is VERY TINY, with numerous pictures and illustrations, and a generous trim size/ full color. It literally has MUCH more on advanced strategy and tactics than the 300 pagers that spend all kinds of space on history and basics!I'm a knife and sword combat instructor at blade combat dot com and have nothing to do with Amazon, the author, or the publishers, and all our reviews are strictly for the benefit of Amazon shoppers. Find the book very useful. I have been taking Fencing lessons and plan to do it competitively. Thus, this book is a reference resource.
