This is one of my favorite reads of the year. Probably because it is based on one of my favorite cliches: best friends turned romance. But this one had a twist that hits home - unrequited love. What do you do when your best friend doesn't feel the same way about you?Abby was such a fun heroine, and her friendship with Cooper highlighted all the qualities that made her HER. That's what made their relationship feel real and sweet and oh so fluffy. While I floundered a bit trying to feel the enormity of the close-knit, best friends group dynamic when 2 of the 4 friends were gone for all but two chapters, I'm also glad we got so much time with just Abby and Cooper because their friendship shows all the foundation work for a great romance.Also, more than just showing the intense, already established friendships, Kasie West brings new people into Abby's life. Lacey and Elliot give Abby the swift kick she needs to get out of her rut with Cooper and with Life, capital L. I found it interesting how Kasie West compared and contrasted the importance of new and old relationships - relying and finding solace in what you've always known, and finding new experiences you didn't know you needed. That's really what this book was about. And that journey applied to Abby and Cooper; and in smaller doses Lacey and Elliot and Rachel (I don't know about Justin, he was in one scene at the end, but I hope we get to know him and the group as a whole better in the companion novels!).I also LOVED Abby's relationship with her mother and grandfather. Especially her grandfather. It's a relationship not commonly seen in YA, so that was fun.

It’s hard for me to describe how much I enjoy Kasie West’s books, and how much I looked forward to reading this one. Fortunately, I was not disappointed, and Love Life and the List delivered on everything that I enjoy from this author: a solid story, engaging characters, a lovable heroine, humor and a dash of romance.I must say the book was a bit different from what I expected. It’s less of a romance and more of a journey of personal growth for Abby, and that includes her relationship with her family as much as anything else. Still, I enjoyed every minute of it, even though there were parts which I found heartbreaking. I really did feel bad for Abby, and at some point I really couldn’t figure out how everything was going to end. Fortunately, the ending was perfect, and it made up for everything that Abby went through.What I loved:- Abby and her determination to grow as a person, as well as an artist. She was a great character, and I really respected her honesty and her decision to leave her comfort zone and face her fears in order to change herself for the better.- Abby’s family, especially her grandfather. Their conversations were hilarious, and their love for each other was very touching too.- Cooper. He could have came off as a bit of a jerk, but instead I found him adorable. Although I was a bit frustrated with him at times, it was still obvious that he really loved Abby, and I completely understood his reasons for not wanting to change their seemingly perfect friendship. He had some growing up to do, and it was nice to see him finally realizing that and admiting how he felt.- The humor, in particular the scene where Abby asks Cooper to decide between listening to quartets or screeching cats.- Abby’s new friend, she was awesome.- The ending. At one point I wasn’t sure who Abby was going to end up with, and though I suppose the story could have gone either way, I am perfectly happy with how it turned out.- Abby could have been best friends with Caymen (The Distance Between Us) and Lily (P.S. I like you). 'Nuff said.What I would have loved to see more of:- Abby and Cooper’s friends Justin and Rachel, we barely got to see them, and they were such a big part of Abby’s life that their absence through most of the book was very missed.- Likewise for Abby’s military dad, I would have liked to see their reunion.- Elliot! He as so cute.- A cameo from Caymen and Xander would have been amazing.Anyway, I loved this story, and I’m already looking forward to Kasie’s next book, I can’t wait!

I really enjoyed this book, despite the rather annoying male lead. Abby doesn't seem to have a WHOLE lot of depth, but she's super sweet and not overly angsty (for the most part), like you find in most teen heroine novels. Her sarcasm wasn't biting or rude (intentionally), and really was just a display of affection for the most part. She wasn't super obnoxious about it - most teen authors seem to use sarcasm as a poor way of trying to make their characters look clever, but instead they just come off rude.I also appreciated that the "list" premise also wasn't super big stretch here as compared to other teen books, where an absurd list ridiculously drives the entire plot.However, the thing I enjoyed most about this book was the interactions between Abby and her grandfather. They were super cute and actually made me laugh out loud, which doesn't happen often for me. I also appreciated that an elderly character was portrayed in an honest and real way, and actually had a good relationship with the surrounding characters.Finally, this was probably the first Kasie West book where I didn't really care for the male lead at all. I understood why Abby liked him, but he just seemed kind of weak despite everything. His excuses were rather pathetic, although sadly realistic.Basically, I give this book points for not following most teen novels where teen sarcasm, a list, and elderly characters are concerned.Overall, a rather refreshing and, all in all, cute little read.

It is an honor to write the first review. I have never met the author, but feel like I know her, through her online videos. Helen, if you happen to read this, I LOVE YOUR RECIPES!!!To those who don't know about Helen, she has a website, (danangcuisine.com) and a youtube channel. The videos are very professionally made. If you enjoy Vietnamese food, and want to try making it at home, her videos are a must see. I very much enjoy Vietnamese food, and think it is healthy as well. Flavorful herbs and fresh fruits and veggies are a big part of the diet.About the book, here are the things that were good about the book:The cookbook was very well organized. Sections were appetizers, noodles, main dishes broken down into pork, chicken, seafood, etc... and then breads, then sweet breads. (As in dessert.) The recipe names are in English first, then the Vietnamese name of the dish underneath. There is always a brief description or comment by the author before the recipe begins. In the margin there is always a list of useful info:Prep time---- ( the time to peel chop etc...)Cook time---( the time on the stove or in the oven)Amount of time the recipe should be ready.What course this recipe is--- ( appetizer, noodle, main, etc...)What region of Vietnam this recipe is from.There are numerous photos of EVERY recipe. Not just the finished product, but step by step photos as you progress through the recipe. If that isn't enough help, every recipe also has an easy access bar code ( the square kind that a smart phone reads) and that will take you directly to a video demonstration on the net. If you downloaded the ebook, you get a link that takes you directly to the video. At the end of many recipes there is a frequently asked questions page. This is good to read before making the recipe, since it may help you avoid any pitfalls, or you are wondering why a certain step is necessary.All of the recipes are in a table of contents in the front of the book. There is no index.Now the negative, and this is only my opinion. Many people may not see this as a problem:There are a some special ingredients needed for some of these recipes. But if you are wanting to make real ethnic food of any kind, this is no surprise. If you live in a big city, you should be able to find it locally. If you live in the country, you can order online, or sub another similar ingredient. The recipes Helen chose to put in this book are probably her most requested recipes. I was disappointed that she didn't include the recipe for Vietnamese beef jerky, (delicious and useful in other recipes). I was a little disappointed that there weren't any of the delicious salads in this book. Her website has some wonderful salads. ---These are minor faults, in my opinion. So, if you are going to buy only one Vietnamese cookbook, this one has great recipes, quick links to videos demos, and is well organized and nicely photographed. (don't know if the binding will hold up. Cookbooks usually take a beating. To my pleasant surprise, this book was printed in Louisville, KY U.S.A. !!!) I am so glad that I now have dozens of these recipes all in one book, easy to access.Helen, even though we have never met, if you are ever in Nashville, let me know, because I would love to cook with you!!!Thanks for all your efforts, and sharing your delicious recipes. ; )

Wow I just got my 2 copies mailed in :) One for me and one for my sister as a gift. I love your step by step pictures, it is one of my favorite characteristic of a good cookbook. With the QR codes, it's also so easy to get more tips! I think this is the best gift to offer to others as it's a great way to share Vietnamese cuisine and culture. Growing up in Canada I feel that I miss some Vietnamese culture and food; cooking delicious food with your easy recipes already makes me feel more connected with my origins. Overall, I am very impressed with the quality of your first book and I hope you will continue your channel and publishing more books in the future!! Wishing you continuing success!

I bought this book as a gift for my brother but I took a look at it so I could write this review. From first glance, this book looks like it is very detailed when desribing how to cook a dish. They show pictures of how some things are done which is very helpful, because I know when I'm reading a recipe, I always ask myself if I'm doing this right, but this book looked like it is great for beginners wanting to learn how to cook authentic Vietnamese food. Would recommend to anyone

Bought this for my Aunt because she loves cookbooks and Vietnamese food. I follow Helen Le online and her cooking is great and instructions easy to follow. Now, I make the very foods I had on a culinary tour of Saigon!

I love Helene on Youtube her recipes. When she came out with a book I naturally brought one. The instructions are easy to follow and it all links to the YouTube video.Her recipes are as authentic Vietnamese as you can get. Even my mom is using some of her recipes.

I love this book! I use it at least once a week.I love Helen's recipes because they are simply written: usually just a page with up to ten steps, and they always turn out well. They remind me of home cooked meals.I hope she makes a second book!

Love this book! She has pictures and to do's on all her recipe's! No guessing on how its suppose to come out. I love her food and this book! She also has youtube videos to follow if you get confused with barcode scanners on each recipe! Pretty dang awesome!!

I'm a huge fan of Helen's You Tube videos. She is amazing. Just got my book and can't wait to start cooking some of her yummy recipes. I love the layout of the book, the instructions are clear and the pictures are beautiful and very helpful. I particularly like the scan code featured next to each recipe that lets you link to the You Tube video for that dish. Nice touch!

Working through this book right now, and want to believe this will "work" for me, but as the author points out it's a long, arduous process that can't be rushed with no short-cuts, so I can't tell you if I am successful. Her writing style could use less words to make her points, but the content is valuable. This is the second book I've read by her, because the first was written for health care providers to address patients who might have eating dysfunctions (either too much or too little) and enlightening the providers unfamiliar with possible common background among such patients.

If you struggle with emotional eating and have suffered through years of yo yo dieting, this book is guaranteed to help you get closer to eating the way you know you are meant to. I keep it in my room in plan sight so I can go to it when I feel I need some guidance, and someone to tell me I'm not messed up, and what I am going through is understandable. Koenig also makes you feel hopeful.I am not saying after one read through your eating issues will be resolved, but if you read it and then use it as a manual for help, and you re-read some of her advice, it will definitely help you get closer to being a normal eater. This is a process (just like developing disordered eating was a process), be patient, and read this :)

The author, an expert in the field of Disordered Eating, sheds valuable light on what she calls "Normal" eating. Pay close attention to those quotation marks, because she's not talking about the way most people eat. It's not that kind of Normal. Normal that isn't in quotes (i.e., what we see most people doing all around us, and we may have grown up with) would be unhealthy processed or take-out food, consumed in excess, which seems to be how most people eat. She's referring (in my opinion) to SANE eating, mindful eating, intelligent eating, which is the reason for the quotation marks. It's eating in accordance with how the body was designed to take in and metabolize nourishment. What would be normal if we were not surrounded by food we don't need and constantly being urged to eat. Eating sanely, and with awareness of why we're eating and what we need, requires an intelligent way of THINKING about food, and that's what she provides here. She helps the reader assess the questions, "Am I hungry?" "What do I need?" "How much of it do I really need?" "Is this smart?" "What do I really want?", etc. So buy the book and remember that "Normal" means Sane, not the crazy kind of eating we see so much of in people who let the advertising industry tell them what to eat, and feel obligated to "clean their plate," and eat way more than is healthy for them, just to be sociable.I've learned a lot from Karen Koenig about what she calls "Normal" eating and I call Sane Eating. Same thing. Eating to nourish the body and soul (chocolate has its place in our lives), not to abuse them.

Karen writes a wonderful book to help disregulated eaters learn to listen to their bodies, trust themselves, and start a journey toward healing. I have tried SO many diets and frustrated doesn't even begin to describe how I was feeling when I desperately googled for help. What I found was a path toward normal eating and sweet relief from the horrible cycle of dieting. I recommend this book to anyone who has tried a diet and had it fail. Dieting wasn't the right path for me and it took me way too long to find my way. I started with this book and read all of Karen's other books as well. This gives you a step by step "guide" to learning how to get in touch with your hunger, figuring out how your body tells you what it needs, and most importantly, what to do when you want to eat but you KNOW you aren't hungry! Usually there's something else going on underneath that hunger and this book helped start me on a path to understanding my needs more clearly. I highly recommend!!

This book has changed the way I eat, and how often and the reasons behind my eating. I've been a "grazer" forever. This book made me look at that and at the feelings I have that I usually turn to eating instead of dealing with those emotions. It's a great place to start for people that have poor eating habits or emotionally eat, and what to be more normal.

This is a wonderful book. It was recommended to me by my nutritionist (shout out to Ginger!) and it has been so enlightening in many ways. It touches on many things I already knew about eating but has much much more that is new for me. Most important for me is it's simple yet in-depth approach and guidelines for looking at and understanding my relationship and irrational good versus bad moral judgments about foods. I initially rejected that I had a moral viewpoint about food until I opened my mind and read, thought about, and reread this book. I particularly like this book as it can be picked up and put down and then returned to. It isn't necessary to read it cover to cover. In fact that was not working for me at all. I needed to read and reflect to be really receptive to all the author was saying and then I could apply it to me and my life. This is one of those books that will always be part of my life's little reference library - a TOP 10. Am I a normal eater? Not yet. However I am moving there and most importantly I believe I can be a normal eater and now I know normal eating when I see it. The author makes no promises that it is easy or that one will become a normal eater or when that will happen. However a lot of help and direction and hope is provided in this easy to read and easy to understand book.

If you are looking more for a psychological assessment for yourself and to dig into why you eat the way you do, and more so why you feel the way you feel, then this is for you. I wasn't wanting to psychoanalyze myself, just get tips and exercises to know what real hunger feels like, eat more mindfully, etc. This isn't totally what I was looking for, but a small section does address specifically what I was cloaking for. If you are looking more for practical applications of mindful eating tips, look elsewhere.
