Ordered this for my grandchildren and it is just as cute as it was when I read it to their Daddy. I really appreciate that Little Golden Books has kept the classic stories in print.

The Saggy Baggy Elephant is such a cute book, about an elephant that has no idea what kind of animal she is. Sooki, the elephant makes her way through the jungle and encounters lots of creatures that are happy to take a bite out of her. She is even made fun of because of her big ears, saggy skin, and long nose. Then she sees some beautiful elephants and wants to be beautiful like them. Guess what, she is! My daughter (age 6) loved this little golden book. Perfect read for us! I used this in her elephant study in our homeschool just to have a great fun book about a cute elephant!

We bought a few of these golden books, but this was the only one with a weirdly stiff and wrong folding binding... the pages move, but the binding doesn't. It feels like it will break if I try to widen it. However, the story is cute with a good message. Not our favorite for sure, but my almost 4 yr old kid seems to like it.

This book is not the same as the original little golden book. The story is not the same and the quality of the book is not good. The pages are larger than the cover, so they stick out farther the cover. Also, the front cover of the book is glued on incorrectly, so that you can't really open the book and turn the pages correctly. I ordered 2 Little Golden Books, the other one is not as bad as this one, but I won't order anymore! Very cheaply made!!

I remember this book, even though it must be at least 60 years since I read it! I didn't think it would still be in print, but here it is, and with good reason: the message is timeless - don't be ashamed of who you are; don't listen to what others say about you. So I bought it and loved it all over again. I want to pass it on to my grandchildren, but not yet. I am still enjoying the story and the pictures. But once I do, maybe in another 60 years my grandchildren can pass it on to theirs!

I loved this book as a kid! This is a slightly different version so it doesn’t go 100 % along with the read aloud that is available online or if you still have the original record.

I read this book as a student in the Master's of Science in Fraud and Forensics program at Carlow University [...]. This book is well written and extremely interesting. The stories of the 250 exonerees and their cases are gripping and chilling. I liked Garrett's use of the case studies to better explain how problems such as forced confessions, contaminated evidence, inadequate legal representation and flawed judicial reviews lend themselves to wrongful convictions. The horrifying realization that our trusted judicial system made such egregious errors is unnerving and is a must read for all students of law enforcement. The book is very detailed and is a fitting argument for the case of reforming legal procedures and requiring the use of scientific evidence.The only flaw with this book is that although the case studies are helpful in understanding the material presented and give the reader a true human element to the statistical data and law jargon, they begin to get confusing as they are referenced repeatedly throughout the book. However, it doesn't significantly impact the readability of the book and the case studies are more helpful than hindering. Garrett's attention to detail has made this book void of any serious flaws.This book will be extremely helpful in my future career in fraud. It has taught me that no matter how clear the answer to any investigation appears it remains truly unproven until scientific evidence or a scientific methodology is used. Garrett presents us with the stories of people who did time for crimes they didn't commit (on average 13 years!) because someone felt that they were clearly the guilty party. However, scientific evidence proved 250 times over just how wrong assumptions such as "clear guilt" can be. I believe this can be applied to all situations in life and should be a foundation of belief for all individuals in law enforcement.

Third, it will let you know that there have been substantial financial awards against the govt for improper conduct in wrongful conviction cases, and so it will let you know there are financial rewards for those willing to serve as "private atty general" in the right matters.The book is well-written, succinct, and not hortatory.I am delivering a copy of the book to some of my local friends in the criminal bar and I expect they will be intrigued.Finally, it is possible, but not likely, that as this book gains traction, at some times, in a few places, in a portion of cases, some govt officials will feel guilty about their misconduct, perhaps particularly because of the harsh glare of publicity, and so they will clean up their act. In this book, Professor Garrett has studied trial transcripts of 250 wrongfully convicted people to unfold "what has gone wrong" with the current criminal justice system in the US.According to him, there are serious systemic failures in criminal prosecutions that cause wrongful conviction. It is also difficult for convicts to claim their innocence under the lengthy appeals and habeas proceedings:-1. Innocent people can be involuntarily succumbed to undue police pressure and deceptive interrogation techniques (Reid technique, "Mutt and Jeff", "False Evidence" "Good Cop, Bad Cop" techniques) (P.22) to make "coerced-complaint" confessions to crime they did not commit during interrogations (P.18). Besides, police can feed details of crimes to innocent people in which confession statements are constructed as if innocent people volunteered a litany of details about the crimes like true culprits could have known. Although the US Constitution regulates confession statements via two key principles: the "Miranda" warnings (protections to shield suspects from coercion) and the requirement of voluntariness (P.36), judges always believes that confessions that corroborated by detailed facts are apparently reliable and voluntary.2. Even though innocent people are reluctant to make confessions to crime they did not commit during interrogations, they can become convicts due to other corrupted evidence, including eyewitness misidentifications, flawed forensics, and trial by liar. The police can misdirect witnesses to pick out of innocent people during "suggestive" or "prompting" identification procedures (live lineup, mug shots, witness book, composite image (P.52). Eyewitness memory can be fallible and those multiple procedures have reinforced false identifications. Judges rarely suppress eyewitness identifications and the five-factor "Mason test" and other eyewitness reliability tests are deeply flawed (false confidence, discrepancies in descriptions, opportunity to view, degree of attention, the passage of time, cross-racial identifications, child witnesses).The practice of forensic science (serology, microscopic hair comparison, bite mark comparison, shoe print comparison, voice comparison) (P.94, P.95, P.102, P.105) is pervasively flawed and unreliable to solve any crime, according to Professor Garret. The presentation of forensic evidence can be entirely one-sided because forensic analysts testify for the prosecutors (DNA testing, Fingerprint comparison) (P.100, P.107). There are also malpractices in crime laboratories which lead to testing procedures in an invalid way. Moreover, prosecutors usually use jailhouse informants (P.123), (P.139), and codefendants (P.141) in order to plug all of the holes in criminal cases (jack-of-all-trades). Those informants can lie in the face of "stick-and-carrot" techniques used by prosecutors (P.130).3. During trial, Innocent people from lower class always fail to afford talented attorneys and expert witnesses to assert their innocence. (P.149, P.163, P.165). They cannot present a strong defense and make access to substantial investigative resources in contrast to prosecutors. There are cases that prosecutors and polices have concealed evidence that can help the defense case.Between Chapter 7 and 8, Professor Garret has criticized appeals and habeas proceedings to be lengthy and unfair. A wrongfully convicted person served 14 years in prison between his trial and his exoneration (P.180). Some of the innocents have spent a long time (3 years for Frank Lee Smith who finally died of cancer before DNA testing completion) to apply for a DNA testing protest their innocence (P.214). Moreover, the appellate and post-conviction procedures do not effectively look at factual instead of legal errors and judges are unwilling to second-guess the verdict of the jury.According to Professor Garret, the current criminal justice system is becoming a "titled played field" (P.176) to wrongfully convicted people. The psychological and physical impact of a false conviction is huge. Innocents are in jail before exoneration and true culprits can continue to be free to commit to other crimes.Nonetheless, the evolving DNA technology has exonerated the innocents and set them free, Professor Garret has maintained that the current criminal justice system should be practically reformed, ranging from criminal procedures (P.244), interrogation (P.247), eyewitness identification (P.249), forensic science (P.252), Jailhouse informant (P.256), death penalty (P.257), prosecution (P.259), defense (P.260), federal reforms (P.261). This is a short book but it is well written and well researched.

A fantastic read but is most definitely NOT a factual account. I actually took some time to research this in both English and German. "Wolfgang Faust" does not exist. I even got confirmation of this from several university professors who are WWII specialists in Germany. The publisher's claims that the book was widely popular after the war and all that are completely fabricated and this book should not be marketed as a non-fiction, historical text. At best it's a work of historical fiction but it is a fictional account of a fictitious person. Period. Is it a fun read about a lesser known battle in the war? Yes. But that's all it is.

While very entertaining this book just has a feel of fiction compared to other well documented publications like tigers in the mud or profile on Michael wittman. It also lacks a lot of details which would lend it more legitimacy like division name, commanders names, details of battles etc. Also, given Germanys personnel shortage towards the end of war, the authors name almost seems fictionally German. Not famous names like carais, or zwetti, but Faust!!!

As a STORY this is an ok read. Having been in the military and also having a history major then there is too much regarding this story that does not hold true from a personal experience. There was proaby a Wolfgang Faust who was in the Panzer Corps but the writer of this story has never been in a Panther tank. There are to many generalisations, no supporting evidence and also points that are not true that makes me belive this is not a true account but rather a story. If you are looking for a story regarding an in depth detail on the working of a panther tank during the final days of the war then you will be disappointed. There is very little information regarding the workings of the Panther and what there is, is not true to the actual working of the panther, e.g. in one paragraph he talks about "throwing open the commanders hatch". The Panther Tank's hatch could not be thrown open but uses a gear mechanism to lift and rotate the hatch to the side! There is also no names given to his actual crew but uses there station, gunner, loader, driver radio operator. This does not give credence to the book.So with that being said you have 135 pages of a story. Treat it as a story with a historical connection much in the same way you would get from a Sven Hassel novel

Pure Nonsense. This book is without question a fake memoir, just like his other book "Tiger Tracks". It reads nothing like the multitude of legitimate German soldier accounts from WW2, and is full of historic inaccuracies and highly implausible situations or actions. The fact that no unit names, or fellow crew member names, etc, are present throughout the book is the first indictor that it is fake, since it makes it impossible to do any fact-checking. Also, the actions read like a graphic novel, full of heads being shot off and other gratuitous gore, which you don't find in many real veteran accounts. Having spent a career in the Army, and as a combat veteran myself - this book screamed "fake" to me within the first few pages. Don't waste your money on this one like I did!

HARD TO BELIEVE

The Last Panther, reads like a script from a video game. Probably a mosaic of memories and anecdotes from many stories ripped from the Eastern Front. The editor's introduction claims The Last Panther was a memoir entitled(sic) "Kesselpanzer", published in English after Faust's death. His "first" book,Tiger Tracks, is similarly written in a style that begs belief. How one man could view and remember (in Technicolor detail) the carnage peering through the narrow vision slits of an armoured fighting vehicle while on the move strains credulity. And one must be wary that the author's name Faust, is a pseudonym (noted in Tiger Tracks).As an adventure war book for fans of WW2, it reads well, and the technical aspects of operation and maintenance of the German machines (and Russian machines, too!) is informative. A little romance is thrown in for good measure. And the pages turn much faster than the tracks of a Panther with a worn-out transmission.

No way is this book what it claims to be, a real historical eyewitness account. I'd give it a zero star if I could. I doubt if the supposed author (Feldwebel Faust) ever existed. Some people may think it is exciting action, but not when you consider that none of it may be technically or factually accurate. It makes me now wonder about any book on Amazon that claims to be "the true story of ..."

Hard-hitting, graphic, and fast moving...those adjectives sum up Faust's highly descriptive account of his experiences during the Halbe pocket breakout. This operation involved the frantic attempt of German troops and civilians to escape the clutches of the Soviets as the noose tightened around them near Berlin in 1945. Faust's role as a Panther commander is described in graphic detail and builds upon his previous experiences as a driver of a Tiger tank on the Eastern Front earlier in the war. (Read "Tiger Tracks") Faust's accounts puts the reader right into the turret of a deadly Panther tank as it confronts overwhelming Soviet infantry, armor, and air power hell-bent on capturing and annihilating all German forces within their grasp as the war ended east of the Elbe river. The ruthlessness of the combat by both sides is not for the faint hearted, so reader discretion is highly recommended.

As someone who follows all that happens in Saudi Arabia, I have been excited from the first moment I read this book was coming out. I was not disappointed. The book came and I read it in two sittings... Mesmerized by Manal's bravery and determination to push for reforms for all women of Saudi Arabia. I was surprised that she was so religiously fanatical in her youth -- she fought against those who longed for freedoms, and later was a leader for those same freedoms she once scorned! What a perilous path she took and of course, most freedom fighters sacrifice much they love in order to gain freedoms... I must say here that Manal's brother was a hero alongside side his heroine sister's side. He is to be commended.Although Manal felt she must flee Saudi Arabia, I earnestly believe that with the second generation of Al-Saud's that the kingdom is moving toward freedom for women. Since I lived in Saudi Arabia for 12 years, from 1978-1990, I have always been aware that social change in the kingdom would be slow, but it seems that the day is coming when these issues will be solved. That is my hope for all people in the kingdom, and most especially for the women and the men who speak out on their behalf.This is a book that I hope will be read by everyone and will be required reading all over the world.

I heard Manal speak on NPR and she was very professional, interesting and forgiving to those who have caused her great pain. I bought the book to support women in Saudi Arabia achieving independence. Manal's story was interesting, painful but hopeful as well. It's amazing what she has been able to accomplish given her background and culture. She made some mistakes in her life but was able to keep moving forward...growing and evolving. She's faced adversity with grace and courage. I wish her the best and hope the culture changes in Saudi Arabia and other countries so that women have the same rights as men and can overcome the bias against them. Being female should not be a liability!

Amazing book, I couldn't put it down a moment. She has a powerful story and is very geniun. Every single line is filled with information and details telling a real story of a smart, driven and brave woman. Everyone should read this because we should support people who want a better life for women, the book is really fun to read and there is an amazing story telling how life is for women in Saudi Arabia.

This book is a beautifully told story--a sad and infuriating and informative story told in a page-turning way.. It gave me a much clearer sense of what life is like for women in Saudi Arabia, as well as a great admiration for the courage and determination of Manal al-Sharif and others who have taken up the fight for women's rights. My book group voted to read it, and we'll be discussing it in a few weeks.

This narrative is a very interesting account of the activism of a Saudi Arabian woman and her quest to acquire the freedom for women to drive in her country. As an American who prizes her freedom and independence, the suppression of women in Saudi is hard to imagine, aside from being angering. The challenging pursuit of the author for women's freedom makes for very moving reading. Definitely a learning experience!

Gives great insight into what it was/is like to grow up and live in Saudi Arabia as a female. A little dry at points but demonstrates that this Saudi woman seemed to suffer a variety of Stockholm syndrome- she bought into the extreme version of Islam that pervaded Mecca during her childhood. A great read right now as another woman was detained this week for wearing a short skirt and crop top.

It's interesting to read about the inequalities which still exist between males and females in the Middle East. It makes me more and more thankful I was born in the USA. It's a shame how women are treated in Saudi Arabia in the name of Islam which is not reflections of the teachings from the Koran.

This book gives great insight to the conditions of women in Saudi Arabia. To the outside world all Saudis are rich from oil revenues and live lives of privilege. Very few have written books to tell it like it really is. It is a closed society that does not want its flaws exposed. This is an excellent book that opened my eyes. It is such a long, long hard struggle for women to be accepted as worthy of equal respect around the planet although women make up 50% of the population and I applaud Manal for her courage and activism.

This work of historical fiction offers fresh perspectives on the War of the Roses, known also as the Cousins' War. The events unfold through the eyes of Katherine Woodville, sister to Queen Elizabeth, wife of King Edward IV of England. Due to her elevation in status through her sister, Katherine marries Harry Stafford, the Duke of Buckingham, and both are alternate narrators throughout the book. Katherine and Harry wed as children, but little else is know historically about Katherine. Yet, the author vividly brings both her and her husband to life, adding a very human element to those turbulent times.The story is well told, as each narrative melds into the next seamlessly, while unfolding for the reader the dramatic and fascinating story of the War of the Roses. It is a wonderful blend of fact and fiction. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, and I was royally entertained by this well-researched book. I also enjoyed the author's notes, following the conclusion of the book. My only criticism of the book is that on occasion, the dialogue shifts a bit too much into the vernacular of today, creating a bit of dissonance in the narrative,which is the only reason I rated it four stars, rather than five. Still, those who love reading historical fiction will most certainly enjoy this book.

I enjoyed this novel for it's refreshing perspective on the Buckingham rebellion and the marriage between Henry Stafford and Katherine Woodville. It is a shame that one historical record can become the defining word upon such a thing as a marriage and the author quotes in her author's note the words of Dominic Mancini that are taken as the basis for the nature of Henry and Kate's marriage: "for, when he (Henry) was younger, he had been forced to marry the queen's sister, whom he scorned to wed on account of her humble origin". Therefore, it was very interesting to me to read a much more balanced version of their marriage and I felt as though Ms. Higginbotham gave sound reasoning for her decision to portray it as such. Sometimes we have to realize that the facts are there in front of us, if we would just get past the murky waters of historical bias.Overall, I really liked both characters and enjoyed reading of how their relationship changed as they grew up together. A child marriage may seem strange to a modern day reader, but through this novel I could clearly see how Henry and Kate became a strong couple due to their shared experiences in childhood as well as adulthood. It was very well-written.Even though it does not affect the quality of the novel itself I will note that the author is not a follower of Richardian ideas, which seem to be rather prevalent in historical fiction these days. That is not to say that she portrays Richard as a monster in keeping with Shakespeare, but rather he is not portrayed as either devil nor saint. He was a man as any other, with ambitions and dreams and a measure of both good and bad. However, if you do not respond well to anything other than saint then this novel is not for you. (Again, not a reflection on the novel itself, only a caution to those with strong feelings on the matter).In my opinion though, Ms. Higginbotham has researched the facts and portrayed the events in a way that resonates with her, as every Cousins War author does. Truthfully, this varied number of perspectives is one of the reasons why this is my favorite era of British history. I could read about it forever, and it would never get old!

From the sidelines, Katherine Woodville, sister of the queen, gives us an interesting perspective of events surrounding the end of the Yorkist dynasty. Told in first person both from her point of view and that of her husband, Henry the Duke of Buckingham, we get a tale partly informed, mostly biased, and sad in a pathetic sort of way. Katherine most certainly does not like the Duke of Gloucester, and she has a difficult time staying neutral in face of her husband's obvious hero-worship. When Edward IV dies and Richard immediately begins his campaign to gain the crown, the fate of her father and brother seals her hatred of the unpleasant new King.This novel is very black-and-white. We learn of Richard's guilt from his own lips in a neutral, unemotional way. There is no ambiguity, which I think would have made events more interesting. But Henry's reaction on hearing the fate of the princes in the tower is enough to explain his sudden about-face and his willingness to join the first rebellion. It is a tidy explanation and fits the most damning interpretation of Richard's actions. With his wife's encouragement, Henry commits himself to a doomed enterprise without possibly thinking of the consequences. Katherine, of course, must struggle on, deprived of her husband, her sons and her estates.The book moves along effortlessly and everything fits together. Perhaps limited by the first person perspective, many events were simply glossed over (like the executions of her relatives and details surrounding the princes in the tower). Nevertheless I found it a good read, even though there were no surprises.
