A few years ago Stephen Hawking was asked what the most important science in the 21st century would be, and he instantly replied "the science of complexity". Hawking is right. The last five hundred years have seen an amazing explosion of progress in most of the traditional sciences: physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy and others. But what is lacking is an understanding of how one science builds on top of another and leads to the universe we live in. Many of the most urgent problems confronting us - the brain, financial markets, healthcare, climate change, terrorism, the large-scale structure of the universe - involve probing connections between various phenomena rather than the phenomena themselves. This understanding of interconnections between various sciences leads to the science of complexity.John Miller's book tackles complexity in its broadest sense by considering a dazzling variety of complex systems, from neurons to honeybees, from irrigation canals in Bali to stock markets, from drug cocktails to manicured lawns in suburbs. His idea is to devote each one of the chapters in the book to a few examples which taken together illustrate a central feature of complex systems. Thus, the various chapters deal with hallmarks of complexity such as feedback, network effects, self-organized criticality, noise, scaling laws and cooperation. None of these qualities are independent of each other, each one builds on top of the other. The title of the book - "a crude look at the whole" - is actually a quote from the physicist Murray Gell-Mann and it very accurately describes how we need to deal with complex systems. We do need to take a look at the whole, but this look also cannot be too fine-grained; it needs to be pointillistic and crude.Some of the examples which Miller uses to illustrate these qualities of complex systems are fascinating. For instance he talks about how the concept of rugged landscapes where making errors (adding noise) can actually lead to more productive outcomes helps one design drug cocktails for complex diseases like cancer and AIDS. Similarly he talks about how both positive and negative feedbacks can cause huge changes in financial systems: he uses the examples of both the great market crash of 2008 and the 'flash crash' of 2010 to describe such sensitive feedbacks. When talking about heterogeneity vs homogeneity, Miller posits that heterogenous systems can be potentially more resilient to shocks because of differential reactions to stimuli, but homogenous systems may be easier to manage.The book also illustrates how simple intelligence is not limited just to human beings by citing the example of slime molds and bacteria which can perform very complex tasks that are mediated through relatively simple molecular interactions. This discussion leads to one on self-reproducing automata in the chapter on cooperation - one of the best in the book. Miller sets up an abstract model based on intelligent agents which can either defect or cooperate. Seen through the lens of the classic prisoner's dilemma of game theory, a somewhat involved analysis shows us that defection (or selfishness) can make us somewhat better off in the short term while cooperation can make us much better off in the long term. Another fascinating example of cooperation comes from Balinese agriculture. The Balinese people have built a complex system of irrigation canals, aqueducts and terraced agriculture. There are upstream and downstream farmers in the system, and the upstream farmers can decide to withhold water from the ones downstream for their own benefit. However it becomes clear that in order to utilize water most efficiently as well as to fight pests, a cooperative strategy in which the water is judiciously shared can work best. This kind of analysis has very important implications for understanding and engineering all kinds of systems, from predator-prey networks to urban communities.Scaling laws are another very interesting aspect of complex systems. These are essentially power laws that relate various aspects of a complex system to one of its basic features. Over the years researchers have observed remarkable similarities in scaling laws over multiple components of a system. For instance in case of animals, important features like metabolic rate, height, heartbeat rate and reproductive capacities are simple power functions of the animals' masses, and this trend holds irrespective of what animal we are talking about. Similarly the size of cities is observed to be related to disparate parameters like electricity and fuel consumption, waste disposal, crime rates and transportation efficiency. Thus whether in case of animals or cities, knowing one critical parameter can allow you to estimate many others. This principle shows us that while simple systems can often be very complex, supposedly complex systems can also lead themselves to relatively simple laws. Finally, self-organized criticality refers to the kind of "tipping points" that Malcolm Gladwell has talked about. The idea is that sometimes a single, relatively trivial phenomenon can tip a system into a complex new state: examples include phenomena as different as the behavior of sand piles, the Arab Spring and the fate of Mayan civilizations.The one limitation of the book is that sometimes it slides over too easily into jargon that will be impenetrable to an an uninformed layman; I myself had trouble understanding some of the analysis of financial systems for example. Nonetheless, this limitation is not significant if one looks at the book not as a comprehensive and self-contained treatise but as a tour of topics in complexity and as an invitation to further study. The tour shows us how each rung of the natural and social sciences is truly connected to each other, how hidden relationships can explain relationships between neutrons and neurons, between ants and market players, between urban communities and sand piles. Most importantly, it shows us how the great age of reductionism which unearthed so many truths about the world by breaking it down into parts and understanding these individual parts must now be complemented by one in which we understand systems not by breaking them down but by building them up and understanding their connections. The book is really an invitation to a future which should excite all of us.

In truth, a book with this title should have more than 500 pages. Complexity Sciences being so rich, nurtured by so many contributions coming from all sciences –including social– it feels like the book presents a too narrow perspective.The author manages, nonetheless, to give an overview of diverse systems –none of them having neurons– that behave following similar principles and rules and that, the reader will be convinced, think and make decisions. It really makes a case for the central pretension of complex sciences, which is that leaving aside idiosyncratic aspects of a system, one can find truths also valid in multiple other systems, regardless of their differences in molecular composition (they could even be immaterial) or scale, and that complexity is really the 'study of everything'.Markets, single cells, agents with cooperative dilemas, hives or algorithms finding low energy states in a group of molecules; systems that could be found in nature or culture, artificially set on a laboratory or simulated on a computer; they all run equivalent rules that allow them to explore solution landscapes, plagued with dangerous mediocre local maxima, for which these systems deploy surprisingly similar strategies to escape. Fascinating.

This is not the first book I have read on Complex Adaptive Systems, but it is an important update on thinking in the field and is a must read for those trying to figure out the basics of how our market system works and how complex systems throughout our world operate. It is not comprehensive nor is it meant to be. It helps the reader understand the broad landscape of the field and has some surprising analysis.This is a perfect introduction to concepts like self segregation, and even its use in bio mechanics.It is a primer for those interested in how the complexity of our world really operate. i

Excellent book about complexity science. Readable, clear examples, insightful understanding of the usefulness of complexity methodology. This kind of work deserves more attention, as probablistic models deserve wider application. Discrete causal science has its place, because it gives clear answers that are more intellectually satisfying, but complexity is a much better snapshot to focus on the dynamics of the messy, uncertain world of information we actually work with in most of our endeavors.

OK book if you know nothing about complexity theory. However, my impression is that most people in technical/scientific fields will be familiar with the concepts presented. As such, 3* for an expensive but shallow overview. The style is fine, explanations fine. Many readers will wonder 'where's the beef?'

Well written look at the whole subject of complexity. I spend a lot of time thinking about how to keep businesses relevant in the marketplace. This book added a new level of understanding of how that probably works. I will buy something that dives deeper into the subject of complexity now.

The authors have evidently devoted a lot of thought to their research and to writing this book. They tell us about unconscious biases that we may have that are inconsistent with our conscious thoughts and ideals.An example of the authors thoughtfulness can be reflected in their use of different colours to label the various types of lies (white, grey, invisible, blue, red, etc) that we often tell, often without being fully conscious of what we are doing. The presentation is vivid, and the ideas easy to commit to memory.I also find the authors' Implicit Association Test (IAT) to be a rather ingenious device to reflect unconscious associations or biases. As I read from a Kindle edition, I find it rather too tedious to try to produce hard copies of the tests to try out. Instead, I went online to take a couple of the tests. With the hard copies, the authors have emphasised that someone taking the test may opt to start first with the either sheet A or B. That is not possible with the online test. Because I am already in my 60s, I find that my mind has considerable difficulty adjusting to switching from the left column to the right (and vice versa) as I progressed from part 1 to part 7 of the online test. As the test relies on measures of the speed and accuracy in which the subject takes the test, I cannot help but wonder if the difficulty that I have experienced in switching time and again between left and right may not have contributed significantly, but erroneously, to what the test attempts to measure. Perhaps the test procedures can be refined to cater for such possible errors. As it stands, I think the IAT Is best taken as a good reflection of unconscious biases, instead of an accurate measure of such.A final comment is that while the authors have done an excellent job in detailing various unconscious biases, they have made less headway in coming up with solutions. I find the few solutions discussed in the book to be much less insightful, or impressive.

Very good explanations and easy to understand. I am one of the 75% of white Americans with a strong preference for white despite my egalitarian views. I wish everyone who says there is no racism in America would read this book. Unfortunately the authors cannot as yet offer a way to counteract our implicit biases. I hope that just knowing of my biases will help me to act more like what I so strongly profess. And it worries me about so many people and family members who are not even aware of their own obvious racism.

After buying a GM 6.5L Diesel on a whim from an auction, I made this techbook my first purchase. I mean, I expected a Haynes manual titled "Diesel Engine Repair Manual" and covering the GM 6.5L Diesel engine to have some measure of information specific to the diesel engine. Boy, was I sorely disappointed.Take, for example, the subject of the pump mounted driver. This is the solenoid pack that governs the electronic fuel injection pump and it has a notoriously high fail rate (as I discovered through both personal experience and the many, many vehicle forums dedicated to the issue). Does the Haynes manual cover the repair or replacement of the PMD? Nope. Does the Haynes manual give you a diagram of the PMD or label it on a diagram of the injection pump? Nope. But wait, you say, surely the manual references it? Nope. Not even a note in the index. As far as the Haynes manual is concerned, the PMD doesn't exist.How about routine maintenance? This manual is sorely lacking in that department as well. I flushed my coolant yesterday. Did the Haynes manual offer anything other than the generic "drain fluid, flush radiator, fill fluid" advice? Nope. There was one small picture of a radiator petcock...which the VAST majority of 6.5L systems don't have. I gained access through the upper and lower radiator hoses like everybody else. No thanks to Haynes.I could go on and on. This manual is filled with generic, non-specific instructions and irrelevant pictures. It's often misleading or vague and I don't even trust what information it does offer anymore because it's been wrong repeatedly.For goodness sake, there isn't even a single diagram or picture of the 6.5L engine and its components in the book! I mean, really? Not a single picture to say "here's where the air filter normally goes and here's where the glow plugs are and here's the injector lines." Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the detailed troubleshooting guide in chapter two for electrical problems with the glow plug controller...but how about we start by showing a picture of the darned thing (it's a small black box) and perhaps show us in the engine bay where it's normally located.Unfortunately, I have to say that this Haynes manual actually isn't worth the paper it was printed on.

This book is very detailed and easy to understand. My fiancé can now rebuild his f250 without cussing and yelling lol. This was our first rodeo with a diesel and this book has been a life saver. He did go to automotive schooling but they only covered regular gasoline engines. Thank you again for putting this out there for the public to use!

book is VERY GENERAL OVER VIEW - NOT A LOT OF SPECIFIC DETAILS.I have an '06 ford power stroke; and its pretty useless for anything beyond a basic understanding given the application varieties.The SELLER IS EXCELENTIT CAME FAST AND WAS WELL PACKED

this book is essential for passing the BD-CS portion of the ARE. i read the entire thing -- all 3" -- and although it took forever (2 months) and felt like information overload at the time, i was very prepared for the difficult electrical and mechanical process questions that the ARE exam threw at me. i had 3 years of internship experience at age 28, post college. i passed the exam first time -- along with all the other ARE exams the first time around -- and am now licensed in Alabama. take it from me, this is a very eye-opening read and definitely worth the time. also, this book is referred to as the "MEEB" book on all the archi user websites.

I came across this book preparing Architectural Registration Exam (ARE).I have to say that this book is an essential for architectswho are preparing MEP (Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing)section of the ARE.The book is divided into basically nine sections.1. design context2. thermal comfort3. illumination4. acoustics5. water/waste6. fire protection7. electricity8. signal equipment9. transportationIt describes various systems of each section with prettyaccessible narrative.Abundance in graphics and diagrams is very helpful.The book is extremely helpful in understanding where eachkit of parts fit into the overall building systems.For instance, I heard about AHUs/ cooling towers/ refrigerationcycle/ boilers/ duct systems/ etc. , but I never knew howthey fit and interconnect to one and another. The book, beingencyclopedic in its contents, really helps to overcome that.The book also pays particular attention to the "sustainable"agendas and strategies.

As a resource librarian in a mid-size design (architecture) firm, building and maintaining a reference library is one of my responsibilities. I normally wait until I get a request for a book before I review it for inclusion since there is so little space for "real" books. This book was requested so that a designer could study for her registration exam. She gave it a glowing review and said it had been mentioned on the exam blogs as one of the must-reads. It also seemed to have, in one place, all the information a practicing architect would need to design with or around mechanical systems, as well as provide the framework and vocabulary to talk to consultants.

I have been referencing past editions of this book for years. It's the bible to architects for understanding this subject matter. It is one of the core reference books for the architect's library and others related to building construction. This new addition updates to the latest technology, and sustainable design practices. Another great book for passive design related to building arrangement and form is Sun, Wind & Light: Architectural Design Strategies, 2nd Edition

Will be using to study for the building systems for the ARE. Its a huge book with a ton of information. Will need to ween through to get the information I really need. This book has more information then you need but this should be a change of pace since I usually have books that have less information that's needed.

When not using MEEB as a paperweight I found its high density and 6 inch depth was more practical for getting things off the top shelf than my previous solution (Webster's dictionary). In addition it gave me a great workout lugging it back and forth from class, and the hundred+ dollars I spent on it prevented me from buying groceries the following two weeks, What a Great Diet plan!!!But seriously if they could just make this an E-book that would be great.

Love boku no hero academia, great content but for christs sake dont order it with anything else amazon will stuff it all in there with whatever you have. Not first time I got a bent af manga so you have been warned.

This volume picks up right where 14 left off, with Deku starting his work-study with Mirio and All Might's former sidekick. And where it leaves off has me completely hyped for volume 16!! Come quickly December :D

I'm up to date on the manga and anime but reading this set of chapters was a joy. Art work is beautiful. You know it's good art when you can still see the basic details of a character even when they are drawn in a perspective background. On to what makes me love any manga/anime CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.Kirishima lovers--this volume is for you (and the one following as well). His quirk isn't all that special hence the running gag with Tetsu Tetsu but its all how you use like how Mirio trained his body and quirk to the point he's OP. We get to Kirishima embrace what he is and accept what he is not.This volume is a great foundation for the raid arc: new characters, some fleshing out of main characters and more world building.

Absolutely love My Hero Academia. I love the art style and adore the characters. Villians and Heros alike are interesting and likeable. Every character has differing personalities, albeit some are quite 'quirky' ;)The 15th installment of MHA left me eager for the next issue! Added that to my shelf immediately. Definitely a great buy and looks great on my manga shelf.Go beyond, plus ultra!
