I was a scout section leader in one of the Big Red One's heavy brigades in 90-91. This book by Col Greg Fontenot is our story, not the one the country saw on TV. No other book comes close to this one, because not only is the colonel an outstanding historian, but also a Big Red One Desert Storm veteran of the Gulf War. His perspective might not be unique, but it's pretty damn close. Be prepared though, because 'The 1st Infantry Division and the Army Transformed' will challenge your assumptions of what you think you know about Desert Storm.Reading this book helped me to fill in so many gaps in my knowledge of that time. It was a hard book and some parts are incredibly sad. But it's hands down the best war story I've ever read. In some places, the narrative reads like Harold Coyle's classic novel 'Team Yankee', but we were actual flesh and blood people in our tanks and Bradleys, not characters in fiction. The battle stories are interspersed with unit narratives and big picture intel that we never had access to when we were in combat. One thing that might surprise many readers is discovering that a third of our division was comprised of the awesome Soldiers of the 2nd Armored Division (Forward) out of Garlstedt, Germany. They formed our third brigade, and their combat odyssey is in here too, because they were and are our Big Red One brothers. And most especially this book is a tribute to our brothers and sisters who died over there, including my friend Cheryl O'Brien. I could write so much more in praise of Col Fontenot's landmark book. To me, 'The 1st Infantry Division and the US Army Transformed' is absolutely essential to understanding our story. This is enough.

I was a tanker with 3-66AR from Feb '87 to Feb '90. In Jan '91 several hundred prior service 19 Kilo's got called back to active duty in support of Desert Storm. The next six weeks found us moving from Ft. Polk to Ft Knox, and finally Grafenwoehr training area as we put crews together and refreshed our skills in anticipation of being sent to replace crews killed during the ground war. We gathered around one tiny television watching every scrap of information we could get each night. Amazingly the cease fire was called on the morning of our last day of training (it was a first aid class) and our training came to and end. By mid-march we were on our way home.As prior service, we knew we had friends in the Gulf, but we only got our news from CNN just like everyone else. For years I had questions about 3/66AR... were they there, where did they fight, how did they hold up?Desert Storm was my war... and I missed it, and there has always been an empty place inside full of nothing but questions. That is not to say that I wanted to go... war is a terrible thing, but my friends were there and I was not. This book, along with the others written about VII Corps, has gone a long way to fill that empty space and answer those questions I've carried with me for almost 3 decades. I feel it is well written and an interesting read with just the right amount of detail. I've read other books that dwell on the daily lives of solders, and some that gave the mile high overview focused on the lives of the General Officers. This book is right in the middle, a good mix of Sergeants and Generals.Thank you for the time and effort you put in to telling the story of TF-1/41, TF-3/66 and the rest of the 1st Infantry Division!

First rate essential reading for any one with interest in Desert Storm and how the United States organized the deployment of the famed 1st Infantry --the Big Red One -- from the center of Kansas to Iraq on the other side of the planet. In addition, Fontenot's narrative of the actual fighting (he was a tank battalion commander has an authentic first person I was there feel to it. Mind you, this is not light reading. The reading is dense, in the very best sense. Each sentence is loaded with information and solid analysis.I was, during my time on the Army General Staff in the Pentagon, working on mobilization planning. I wish I had had The First Infantry Division and the USArmy Transformed as a modern reference and illumination of the difficulties of the sudden mobilization and depl0yment of a fighting mechanized infantry division for combat in the desert of Iraq.I commend this volume to anyone interested in modern military history and warfighting. It is first rate.

Greg Fontenot's book is an excellent portrayal of the 1st Infantry Division from the 1970s's until Desert Storm. I served in all three of the Division's brigades in tank battalions as a staff officer and company commander, was on the Division Staff twice (the second time during Desert Storm), and finished my active service as the S-4 of the 2nd Brigade. I know many of the people in the book first hand and served with them in various units. As a division staff operations officer, my responsibility was to take the reports of the brigades, synthesize them, inform the corps headquarters, and on occasion, offer suggestions to the commanders. What Fontenot does not relate that for much of the battle after we penetrated the 26th Iraqi Division, the Division Main, where I served, was out of the battle trying to catch up and get back into the fight; for most of the mobile phase, the Division Tactical Command Post was in control and we couldn't even talk to them! In fact, I was in the back of the Headquarters Company's Kitchen Truck and so did not know many of the details occurring while we were trying to get forward. This book does an excellent job of filling in my knowledge gaps and providing a better understanding of the how we fought the battle. The book is well written, thought provoking (especially as we consider the effects of being at war for over 15 years and reducing the size of the army once again, and provides an excellent telling of the campaign for both the professional and the layman. Very highly recommended.
