Review

"… an in-depth and detailed presentation of the UNIX system."―Hussein Abdel-Wahab, Department of Computer Science, Old Dominion University "I have utilized Unix: The Textbook for classes I have taught, and recommend it as a reference for Unix users at all levels. This new edition has many updates, including new content for networking, graphical interfaces, and other contemporary topics. Students will appreciate the incremental introduction to Unix, and experts will appreciate the thoroughness and depth."―Dr. Gregory Newby, research computing expert

It's a great book that covers a lot of topics in depth related to bash. Lots of information that even beginners can go through and learn so much from this book. Redirection, File processing, Processes. Bourne Shell Programming, C Shell programming, Python , System programming and more are included in this book and in great depth too. My school course only covered the tip of this but I've learnt so much more beyond that from the book.

Good

I apologize for using the reviews option for this review, but as of this time I apparently have no option.I had the first edition, but lost it in Hurricane Harvey (Some of the examples/commands etc. would not using Mac Unix). Unfortunately, I do not see a questions option for this book on Amazon's webpage. I got a kindle sample from the page and in reading the intro saw:The two UNIX systems that we deploy to illustrate everything in this edition are PC-BSD and Solaris. There are many things that make these two systems superior to, as well as very different from, any contemporary, nominally UNIX distribution, and also from other NIX-like operating systems, such as Linux and OS X. Alas, one reviewer has said that the UNIX systems used in the book are no longer available. So, does that mean that a 4th edition is required, and will this current book "work" in learning UNIX for the Mac?Bottom line is that I did like the book that I had, and would like to know if, in using macOS, it will be worth the price?

I use the book as a reference manual for when I want to do anything specific. It is AWESOME. I hate to offend, but sometimes the man pages just aren't descriptive enough for me. This book provides actual examples of everything put into practice. Also, if I want to do something specific, but don't even know the name of a program, the table of contents shows me the exact section to look in the book for a type of tool to use.The only issue I have, is that OpenSolaris and PC-BSD are no longer available. That's nothing against the book, it's just that some of the functionality that was available to the author, is no longer available anywhere. I could not find an available Unix operating system that has the recursive option available to the rmdir program. This is definitely a plus, because it covers functionality that is kind of rare, or possibly expensive.

Few textbooks qualify as essential, but this offering is a must have for anyone who needs or wants to know UNIEX. Your skill level is immaterial as this textbook breaks down what you need to know in terms that educate the user, whether novice or uber-tech. You'll will be surprised just how many times you reference this book, even when you think you know it all. I rated this book 5 stars simply because that is the maximum valued that can be assigned in a review. If you don't have a copy, grab one!
