If you want an in depth book on his time in the Sex Pistols, maybe the other one would be better. But if you still read this book--after getting fair warning--and still complain that he doesn't go in depth enough about his time with the Sex Pistols, then please, don't write a negative review about it! This is an actual autobiography that hangs with the best of them. John Lydon has obviously had many other things go on in his life, PiL is his band of several decades, not the Sex Pistols. He gives credit for the SP in helping launch his career, but also blames Malcolm for his inept management (case in point: scheduling the US tour to a bunch of small town venues instead of booking more in the large metro areas). But enough of the Sex Pistols! This is a man who single-handedly wrote some bombastic anti-establishment lyrics that, frankly, could have propelled any band into the Mount Rushmore of punk. So while I'm glad I read about that small period in John's life I'm also glad he covered it as much as needed to be said relevant to the rest of his life. I'm a huge PiL fan, this is a band that is one of the first Post Punk bands, and he speaks tons about its development as well. Going back to the beginning, with his early life in abject poverty working-class conditions, his bout with Meningitis which obviously had a large effect on his mentality, and his world-view, overall I enjoyed this fairly-long book. (500 pg).Frankly, I was aftraid I would get bored and drop it after the first half of it. But, no, John Lydon's writing style kept me reading and even wanting it not to end. I'm glad he doesn't over-emphasize the Sex Pistols. And as a musician having listened to much of his work during and beyond that band, I am astounded at the quality of JL's lyrics and vocal quality. He wasn't about the notes, definitely not pitch-perfect AT ALL. But his voice is distinctive, perhaps as distinctive as any of the greatest Rock vocalists of all time. His writing voice is also distinctive. I found the use of his own slang and prose in the book to raise the emotive energy a ton. That's just the way I see it. An excellent autobiography.
I read Lydon's "Rotten:No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs" when it came out in 1994 and quite liked it. I got this as a used paperback for a terrific price from a 3rd party seller here on Amazon. I can honestly hear John Lydon's voice when I read this book. His writing style is very conversational, and he often uses incredibly grammatically incorrect phrases - but he does that in real life, so it's like he's speaking to the reader, trying to communicate directly to the reader, something he says several times in the book, that his ultimate goal is to communicate ideas. Not that his ideas and your ideas will always align, you may or may not agree with his opinions or his tone, but you DO come away from this book knowing an awful lot about the man - straight from the horse's mouth, as they say. Lydon pulls no punches and he certainly suffers no fools. A funny, informative and often oddly touching account of his life and career in music. Highly recommended.
IMO John Lydon is one of a very few genuine people in the cesspool known as the music business. The fact that he has succeeded almost 40 years and stayed authentic throughout is a great subject for a book. His universally fine sense of humor shines throughout this book as it has throughout his career. It's a great read.
Who would have thought the creator of punk was a pacifist? I remember seeing PiL in person in Chicago in the '80's. Loved their music but had no idea who Johnny Lydon really was as a person. His persona was obviously manipulated by the media. The press in Britain can be brutal and dishonest to say the least. I really enjoyed getting to know the real Johnny Lydon in his own words, not the words of a journalist with an agenda. He is a straight talking, wickedly funny individual. I think "individual" is a pretty accurate description of JL. It seems he has fought many battles in life with the biggest being to stay true to himself and what he believes. You don't have to agree with him, or even like him for that matter, but you must respect the price he has paid to maintain his own sense of dignity. I found his story and views admirable. He's certainly not one to play the victim. No excuses here. He is a man whom takes responsibility for his own views and behaviour. I'm left with a feeling of hope that there are still people in the world unafraid to own their behaviour and stand by their convictions. Great read. Highly entertaining, illuminating and recommended.
