This guide to Lisbon is perhaps the worst travel book I have used, and certainly the worst produced by Lonely Planet, After visitng a place listed in the guide with the help of my companion's Rick Stevens' Portugal guidebook, I could begin to understand the logic behind the Lonely Planet's author's judgment that the place was "best" or "top". But otherwise, the presentation is thoroughly confusing. First, the author seemed compelled to focus on what was "Best." There are so many "Bests" that they all lose meaning. Instead, I would have preferred practical information. For example, in Belem, the Jeronomous Monastery is on everyone's list to visit. But Rick Stevens helpfully notes that if you want to skip the 90-minute (or longer) line and visit only the attached church (which is free and well worth viewing), there is virtually no line for entry to the church. Second, most of the maps provided in the book are via a link to Google Maps. This is worthless unless you have an internet connection (my iPad, like most, connects only via wi-fi and not via cellular data). Third, the information about each site or place is so limited that it adds nothing more (and often less) than information you can obtain from a free brochure at the church, museum, etc. There is virtually nothing on the history of the city, its current demography, politics or society, or the impact of the 44-year Salazaar dictatorship. A new and well-curated museum that does provide a history of the dictatorship and the emergence of democracy in Portugal in 1975 is Museu do Aljube Resistência e Liberdade (Museum of Cells - Resistance and Liberation) at Rua de Augusto Rosa, 42 (close to the popular Saint George Castle [Castelo Sao Jorge] and 1/2 block from the Sé Cathedral). In short, if you want limited information, save your money and pick up information guides at one of the numerous Lisbon Tourist Information kiosks. Otherwise, buy Rick Stevens' guidebook which is also available from Amazon.
This is the 3rd pocket book I buy from Lonely Planet. I would say that Pocket Lisbon is probably the most complete one I've had. I feel that since Lisbon is not a huge city, everything I needed to know about it was in this pocket edition. Perfect for a 3 day visit, good maps, information about prices were accurate and it fit in my purse. Loved it!
Needed a guide book for lisbon but i didnt want to be weighed down by a big book. This pocket size guide has a map and also a very good amount of info about all of the major sights and facts about lisbon. I purchased this book mostly for its form factor and publish date to make sure all information is current.
I decided to take a quick trip to Lisbon with friends and did not spend a lot of time researching much ahead of time. I found that this guide was great to make sure I made the most of my time there without going into deep detail. Perhaps if you are planning well in advance, you would want a more substantial guide. This was perfect for me in scope and size...especially size. To be able to tuck into a purse or even pocket made getting around easier. The paper map came in handy quite a few times, though I did combine it with maps and apps on my smart phone. Overall, I would buy it again!
The two best restaurants we dined at were recommendations from this book- her recommendations were spot on. We wanted to find authentic Portugese food and thanks to this book-found two places we loved. They were not expensive- one was surprisingly cheap- but they had great food, great atmosphere- and we enjoyed them greatly. We also took her recommendations for daily excursions-and it was much better than any of the other guides we had- in terms of what to see and what to do. No one else recommended the places she did- she knew the places that weren't just the tourist traps. They were interesting, authentic and worthwhile stops. We were all really impressed with it.
Good small preparation guide which will be handy on the ground because of the excellent maps.
This book directed us to the excellent Lisbon restaurant, 100 Manieras. For that service alone, it deserves a couple of stars. As for the rest of the book, it does a fine job, as you would expect.There is one serious downside: The book contains links to Offline Maps as well as Google Maps next to each site, place, monument, shop etc. However, none of those links work in the Kindle edition. Instead of a map, what you get is the Oxford Dictionary explanation of the word "Offline"! And that always happens your Kindle, and sometimes when you read the book on a PC.
A good starter to get to know the city, but some information was incorrect or already outdated.
