From Library Journal

Parfitt, author of Operation Moses ( LJ 10/15/85), here writes a combined travel book and history of Jewish communities in Asia and Africa. With "the lost tribes of Israel" as theme, he explores such groups as the Makuya and the Beit Shalom in Japan, the Lemba in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and the Falashas in Ethiopia; analyzes the ethnic differences between the Baghdadi Jews and the Bene Israel of Bombay; and lays bare the conditions of the Jewish communities of Syria and Singapore. Some material, especially that about the Lemba and Japanese Judaic-like groups, is not easily accessible elsewhere. For large Judaic and religious collections. Maurice S. Tuchman, Hebrew Coll. Lib., Brookline, Mass.Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Fascinating!!

Great book and seller

Of the six groups of 'Jews' that Parfitt visited, there are only three that are truly 'lost'. The Jews of Syria are well known, they are just trapped in the politics of the Middle East. The Bagdadi and Bet Israel of the area near Bombay have been known about for years; as are the Jews of Singapore who are the remnant of Bagdadis who were truly a trading colony. Those of the 'Secret Tribe of Zebulun' (my namesake) are modern Japanese who are looking for spirituality based on the Old Testament and are more like Christians with hebraic tendencies (they accept Jesus). At least in this book he makes a tangential look at the people of eastern India who have claimed to be a lost tribe for many years. To read more about this Tribe you should read Hillel Halkin's "Across the Sabbath River".The two true lost tribes, are the Falashas of Ethiopia (Tribe of Dan) and the BaLemba of Zimbabwe/South Africa. A major portion of the Falashas were gotten out of Ethiopia in the 1980s and are settled in Israel as part of "Operaton Moses".The Lemba have recently been in the news as Parfait and some scientists have raised an amazing probability to prove they are truly descendents of a Jewish tribe. A few years ago, a Kohain gene (found among both the Sephardi and Ashkenaz, at a rate of greater than 50%, as opposed to 5-6% in the general Jewish population, and under 2% in Europeans) was identified by some Israeli researchers. When the did DNA studies on the Lemba (who are separated into twelve clans), the senior clan had a rate of 50% of the Kohain gene, and the general Lemba community was at 5%. So make up your own mind.

Parfitt used the title "The Thirteenth Gate" to refer to ancient Jerusalem. The city had 12 gates for members of each of the 12 tribes of Israel, and a thirteenth for those not knowing to which tribe they belonged, according to the Hasidic leader, Dov Ber the Maggid of Merericz (d.1772), who Parfitt quotes in an epigraph before his introduction. Therefore, Parfitt has it correct: Jewish groups, some like Syria's few remaining Jews simply held hostage (or abandoned by the world), and some, such as Japan's "Tribe of Zebulun," not recognized as Jewish according to rabbinical law.Yet all six groups described here are of great interest, whether considered Jewish under rabbinic law, or not. Parfitt's Royal Historical study of Jews in Palestine, 1800-1882 and Jews of Yemen 1900-1950 (Brill) are both more scholarly, and perhaps of greater interest to academics than this shorter and volume designed for a lay audience. But hiss writings on the Jewish communities and Jewish "fringe" of the world are always compelling --- and this book is no exception. I recommend it highly.---Alyssa A. Lappen
