About the Author
Dr. Marvin DeJong received his Ph.D. in astronomy from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965 after receiving a M.S. degree in physics from Clarkson college of Technology and an A.B. in Physics from Hope College. He came to the College of the Ozarks in 1967, where he is presently Professor of Physics. He has also taught at Ohio State University, the University of Nebraska, and at the Air Force Academy where he taught a course on transforming Physics Content with New Technologies. He has published six books with Addison-Wesley, 1991 and has written over 80 scientific articles and papers and conducted a number of workshops. He won the Distinguished Service Citation from the American Association of Physics Teachers in 1987 and is a member and past chair of the AAPT Area Committee on Computers in Physics Education.

This book arrived on time and in good shape. Am working at using it to learn Mathematica and Physics with calculus
I recently purchased a home edition of Mathematica after finding this book among my old physics and math texts. I haven't used Mathematica in five years when I last had access to a free academic copy. Now retired from college teaching and some years in aerospace, I became interested in modeling orbital problems in Mathematica again. This text has given me the re-boot I needed, and more. I've now worked my way most of the way through it and it has been great as a re-introduction to orbit dynamics, applications in physics and mathematical simulation. It's a very readable text with fairly easy and complete examples, though some of the extensions left to the reader (student) can be challenging. (I'm surprised that my used copy is now worth about double the price I paid for it a decade ago!) A very useful,thought provoking, if a little dated, text.
There are a number of books out for using Mathematica in a physics setting. I have found most of these books would require substantial "gutting" if I were to use their routines for my calculus based physics class. I was very happy to encounter "Mathematica for Calculus Based Physics" which provided me with a number of insights into to the calc based sequence itself and how I can use this to enhance my students educational experiences. If you are considering using Mathematica for either calc or calc based physics I strongly recommend that you obtain this text before you do.Chris UbingCochise College
