The police and detectives need to solve the crime to mitigate people's fear. Unfortunately, they accomplish this objective by finding suspects and attempting to prove their guilt rather than truly finding those responsible for the murders. The police, the district attorney's office, and the judge all contribute to the lack of justice in this case as three teenage boys are found guilty of murder with nothing more than circumstantial evidence. The unethical practices of those in charge show that those who wield power can often have more control than anyone desires. Leveritt presents an unfortunate, disturbing example of how our justice systems creates injustice. We must remember, "There by the grace of God go I" for anyone could find themselves in a similar situation.

The story of three eight year-olds murdered and the West Memphis Three, the three boys who were subsequently tried, convicted and condemned for those murders, is a full-blown clusterbomb of sloppy and irresponsible investigation, prosecution and adjudication and well worth being prominent in the public record for the foul-ups that can and do happen in the justice system that can lead to innocent lives on death row. Read all you can about this case, watch the documentaries, and know that there are serious problems in our way of things. But I just wish Leveritt's book was more readable and involved more storytelling to bring the details to life. Granted, Leveritt may have had TOO much to work with, as the sheer magnitude of problems behind convicting these three is mind-boggling.

I did not truly remember this story, even though I live in Arkansas, as I was a younger teenager at the time. After reading this alongside other online stories and recollections, I am embarrassed by the willful ignorance of the prosecutors and a judge vying for higher office. The mismanagement of evidence and railroading of someone with low mental capacity, alongside relying heavily on the local "occult expert" generating Salem like hysteria is ludicrous. The police truly needed some outside help with this one. Just glad these guys made it out the other side.

i don't know why it took me so long to get around to reading this book. it was way more then i expected. ms. leveritt's style of writing is very interesting. i enjoyed it because in many ways it gave the public's view (especially at the time of the crime) and then the obvious mistakes and efforts to basically frame the 3 teenagers esp. damien echols. i especially found the notes very interesting and helpful ( they filled all the missing details that in the most the public and juries did not have a chance to hear). i have seen all the films associated with this case and all the different newsmagazines (i.e. 48 hrs) several times. i feel this work fills in missing parts in the films & tv shows. thank you mara for all your hard work both with this book and helping to finally get the west memphis three free.

After having seen the movie of the same name I had to read this book. It is an excellent piece of journalism. It is not surprising that she writes for a newspaper and has received awards for doing so. It is surprising that she has only one other work of non- fiction to her name according to the books cover. The book is highly detailed in it's coverage of the case. The book has little in common with the film of the same name. An excellent true crime depiction of how the more than likely innocent can be sent to prison for what was to be he rest of their lives. After having read this I had to plan to read the authors other work. The tale of Devils Knot is a grim tale of the death of three boys that leaves one with a feeling of who commited this horrible act. It seems quite plain that it was not those who went to prison for it.

I had heard some things about this case but had never really delved into it. This book, convinced me that it was important that I pay attention, and begin digging. I kept looking for evidence that the WM3 were guilty, without success. The truth is that this was a gross miscarriage of justice and the people who perpetrated these lies should be more than ashamed of themselves. In fact, they should all be prosecuted, but that is one of the reasons they will never admit that they fabricated this ridiculous case against these boys...and the people (and still some people believe the lies) bought it hook, line and sinker. I pray that the day will come that the WM3 will be pardoned. I am encouraged by the men these boys have become and wish them nothing but the very best that life has to offer in the future.

Very good book! Very interesting. Being from Arkansas, I never knew the whole story because I was young when it happened. Just heard the story from the news and news papers. Book really told the story of what happened.

I purchased this book in 2004 after seeing the tail end of the HBO documentary "Paradise Lost, the Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills". The book has been sitting on my book shelf for almost 6 years and I decided to read it after hearing the Casey Anthony verdict.Mara Leveritt has done an outstanding job of reporting on the real facts of this case and let's the reader decide if the West Memphis 3 are guilty or not. My heart bleeds for all the children who were affected by this awful crime, but I was outraged at the the corruption and the lengths that law enforcement went to to get this guilty verdict. How could this happen in the United States of America?But after reading this book and doing some internet searches, there appears to be light at the end of the dark and ugly tunnel, with new DNA evidence being discovered. I truly hope that when this case is all wrapped up that Ms. Leveritt will follow up with the end of the story.
